YU Yuphoria: frequently asked questions

“Got queries about the budget 4G-enabled YU Yuphoria? We ‘ve got the answers”

It’s not often we come across compact, handy smartphones that look stylish, boast compelling specs, and don’t cost a packet. Which is exactly the reason why the new YU Yuphoria stands out from the crowd. Expectations from YU were quite high after the ripples it created in the Indian smartphone arena with its debut offering, the Yureka (review), and with the lower-rung Yuphoria (first impressions), it has successfully been able to come up with a handset that looks like another game-changer, on paper at least. We’ll have the full lowdown on it in our full review, but today, how about we try and tackle some of the usual queries that revolve around a new smartphone? So here goes…

How about a refresher on the core specs?

The Yuphoria sports a 5-inch laminated display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels. Packing a 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, the device also boasts 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The photography-related shenanigans are handled by an 8-megapixel autofocus camera at the rear, complemented by an LED flash, while a 5MP wide-angle shooter stands guard at the front. The handset sips juice from a 2,230mAh battery that comes equipped with Quick Charging 1.0.

Does the YU Yuphoria come with a layer of Gorilla Glass on its screen?

Yeah, the Yuphoria’s screen is protected by third-generation Corning Gorilla Glass.

Any details on the design? What colours does the YU Yuphoria come in?

The Yuphoria sports a metal frame, while the rear panel is fashioned out of matte-finished plastic. The design is symmetrical, so all elements like the camera, the micro-USB port at the bottom and the 3.5mm audio socket on top are placed dead in the centre. The camera lens at the rear is encircled by a ring that’s inspired from the ‘Rings of Saturn’, as per the company, and this will form part of the brand’s design DNA going forward. The available colour options include Buffed Steel (with a black rear panel), and Champagne Gold (with a white back panel).

What SIM cards does the Yuphoria accept? Does it support 4G?

The Yuphoria is a dual-SIM device, and comes with a pair of micro-SIM slots hidden under its removable back panel. The smartphone is compatible with both LTE bands present in India – the current band 40 (2,300MHz), and the upcoming band 3 (1,800MHz). 4G is supported on both SIM slots.

What about USB OTG?

It looks like USB OTG isn’t supported, which is a bummer… since it’s such a useful feature to have in a crunch.

Does the YU Yuphoria support NFC? What are the other connectivity options on offer?

There’s no NFC support, alas. The other connectivity options include standard ones like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and A-GPS.

How much storage Does the Yuphoria offer? Can I add more?

Out of the 16GB, about 11GB is available to use for apps and personal data. The microSD card slot lets you add up to 32GB more.

What are the sensors available?

The available sensors cover a G-sensor, proximity, an ambient light sensor, a gyroscope and a magnetic sensor.

How are the cameras on the Yuphoria?

The rear camera on the Yuphoria comes with an 8MP sensor, autofocus, f/2.2 aperture and an LED flash, while the 5-meg shooter at front features an 85-degree wide-angle view. We’ll urge you to take a peek at the camera review for a detailed lowdown of the Yuphoria’s camera performance, but we can tell you that the device is quite capable when it comes to shooting capabilities and shouldn’t disappoint casual photogs, especially considering that it’s a budget device.

What about the software side of things?

The Yuphoria runs Cyanogen 12, which is based on Android Lollipop. The platform brings a near-stock Android look and feel, but there are quite a few tweaks and adjustments available under the hood for those who want utmost control. For example, you can customise the navigation soft keys, control app notifications and permissions, tweak the notification bar, and more. There’s theme support as well. Truecaller functionality now comes integrated into the dialer, while the email is powered by Boxer. The Cyanogen platform is likely to be a crowd-puller for the Yuphoria, as it keeps the original Android DNA intact but brings in quite a few enhancements that power users like.

Any other features I should know about?

Yup, you might be interested in knowing that the Yuphoria features quite a few audio-related enhancements, including Pure Wolfson sound and AAC speakers. Further, Audio FX comes preloaded as an app on the device and lets you tweak the sound as well.

How much do I have to shell out for the YU Yuphoria? How can I buy one?

The Yuphoria has been priced quite attractively at Rs 6,999. The smartphone will be available to buy via the flash sales model on Amazon, and the pre-registrations for the first sale scheduled for 2 pm on May 28th are currently on.
