“The Xiaomi Mi7 is expected to come with a display notch and IR Camera enabled Face Unlock”
The Chinese Titan Xiaomi has set aside March 27th as the date to unveil its next flagship – the Mi Mix 2S. However, speculations about the next flagship in the Mi series, the Xiaomi Mi 7 are already gaining momentum on the internet. We saw an alleged About Phone section screenshot of the device last month, followed by a leaked firmware, which revealed quite a few details of the upcoming device. Now, the handset has popped up on the benchmarking website GeekBench, confirming the processor and RAM.
The handset allegedly carries the codename ‘Dipper’, as seen on GeekBench. Notably, the handset maker has a history of codenaming its devices after constellations and Dipper falls in line with the same, with reference to the Big Dipper. As seen in the listing, the upcoming flagship will come powered by the top-tier Snapdragon 845 SoC, which is mated to 6GB RAM. The device is also seen running Android 8.0 Oreo. The single-core test score of the handset is 2,449, whereas the multi-core test score is 8,309. According to several previous reports, Xiaomi has tied up with Qualcomm to optimise the performance of the Snapdragon 845 chip in its handsets, and the GeekBench scores are indicative of that.
In yet another report, in a firmware leak by @FunkyHuawei and XDA-Developers, it has been revealed that the upcoming flagship will feature a display notch on its OLED panel with Always-on display and IR camera. There are several references in the firmware files to the notch with a build. prop called ro.miui.notch set to ‘1′. Moreover, the firmware files also reveal a new method called IRCamera, which is used in reference to MIUI Face Unlock in several places. This means that the Xiaomi Mi 7 might use an infrared camera sensor for face unlock, just like Apple iPhone X (review).
There is not much information about the handset as of now and the above details should also be taken with a pinch of salt at this point. Xiaomi is expected to launch the handset in June this year. We will bring you more updates as and when they emerge, stay tuned.
