“Xiaomi is rumoured to launch a couple of new Redmi series devices featuring 18:9 displays”
Multiple reports in the past have indicated that Xiaomi is working on a budget smartphone featuring a nearly bezel-free 18:9 display. Some reports suggest that it will be the part of the Redmi series, and may launch as the Redmi Note 5, Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus. Last month, the Redmi Note 5 was spotted on the Chinese certification agency TENAA’s website, and is expected to be unveiled at some time later this year. Now ahead of the unveiling, an alleged render of a new Xiaomi device featuring a similar 18:9 display has hit the interwebs.
According to the leaked render, the upcoming Xiaomi smartphone will pack in an 18:9 all-screen design. The phone will have narrow bezels on the two sides and slim bezels on the top and bottom. The image suggests that the device could come with two selfie cameras, which are sitting alongside the earpiece and other sensors on top. The phone appears to sport an all-metal unibody design and dual speakers at the bottom. Unfortunately, the new leak doesn’t reveal anything else about the handset.
A similar looking device that was spotted on TENAA had a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor below a single primary camera sensor. Some other reports indicated that the device could have a different model with a dual primary camera sensor at the rear.
The phone spotted on the certification website will feature a 5.9-inch TFT display bearing a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 pixels and an 18:9 aspect ratio. The device will be powered by a 2.0GHz octa-core SoC, which could be the MediaTek Helio P25 or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor. The handset will come with a 12-megapixel primary shooter and a 5-megapixel secondary shooter. The phone will boot MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat, and will be fuelled by a 4,000mAh battery. The device will be available in a number of hues – black, gold, rose gold, white, blue, red, pink, grey and silver.
There’s no way to confirm the authenticity of any of these leaks, so it’s advisable to take these with a pinch of salt until the brand officially announces the phone. Reports indicate that it could be priced at the equivalent of around Rs 15,000.
