In the wake of the latest recommendations by TRAI the telecom industry service providers are facing a lot of heat. This has lead Vodafone to increase tariff for its post-paid subscribers in the Mumbai circles. The post-paid service users of Vodafone will have to shelve out 20% more tariff now. So their calls would cost 1.2 paisa per second instead of 1 paisa per second hence giving a total increase of 12 paisa/minute. The new rates will be applied from May. The company is sending sms to its subscribers in Mumbai to inform them of this hike. However a lot of people have still not received these sms which is annoying. Bharti Airtel, Aircel and Idea Cellular have increased call tariffs in some circles since last year. Mumbai happens to be a top circle. Vodafone is one of the largest mobile service providers in India. The customers of Vodafone are over 150 million. However the users with post paid connection are only 5% of its total users. In the days to come we can expect other mobile service providers to hike their call prices. The latest TRAI recommendations have put a lot of doubts and uncertainties amongst the service providers. However mobile service providers like Uninor are taking competition head-on launching cheap products every other day. Vodafone should take heed.
