“The NEX Ultimate is a loaded flagship, and here’s what makes it special”

What started as a mere concept at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, finally reached its logical conclusion yesterday when Vivo launched its NEX series of smartphones. The Chinese brand has introduced two variants of its latest offering – the NEX and the high-end NEX Ultimate. Apart from offering a powerful hardware, the NEX Ultimate comes with a number of innovative features. Wondering why we think so? Read on to find out what makes the Vivo NEX Ultimate stand out from the other smartphones in the market.

All screen, no bezels

Back when the APEX was showcased by the brand, the first thing that distinctively stood out was its immersive display. The Vivo NEX Ultimate retains the same display with next-to-no bezels on three sides and a very slim bottom bezel. The brand has managed to achieve a never-seen-before screen-to-body ratio of 91.24 percent by placing the proximity and ambient sensor below the display as well as the unique placement of the selfie camera.

The Ultra FullView AMOLED display on the NEX Ultimate measures 6.59-inches diagonally and comes with full HD+ resolution and an aspect ratio of 19.3:9. The display also gets the third-gen under-display fingerprint scanner from Vivo, which the brand claims to be 50 percent more accurate and 10 percent faster.

Pop-up selfie camera

You must’ve noticed that the smartphone is missing the selfie camera, at least on the fascia. Fret not, as Vivo has chosen an innovative placement for the front shooter. It’s hidden inside the chassis of the handset and as soon as you switch to the selfie mode, you will see the 8-megapixel f/2.0 sensor smoothly slide out of the top left corner. Vivo claims that the front camera only takes a second to elevate once the selfie mode has been toggled. The selfie camera also comes equipped with AI-enabled face beauty features.

To achieve the all-screen fascia, Vivo has also let go of the conventional earpiece in favour of its proprietary Screen SoundCasting technology. This tech is similar to what the bone conduction earphones use and utilises fine vibrations to deliver the audio. There is a micro-vibration unit under the display of the device, which generates the sound. Vivo claims that the technology has been designed to enhance sound quality with more powerful bass and softer, smoother treble. The mouthpiece on the other hand, is placed on the chin of the device.

Jovi Assistant… at your beck and call

With tech giants like Google, Apple, and Samsung among others betting big on virtual assistants, Vivo has also joined the bandwagon with its own AI-powered Jovi Assistant. It’s baked into the NEX Ultimate and besides the usual assistant features, Jovi also offers features like NLU (natural language understanding), ASR (automatic speech recognition), emotion detection and text-to-speech, among others. There is also a dedicated physical button on the side of the NEX Ultimate to pull up the virtual assistant from any screen. Furthermore, Vivo claims that the Jovi Assistant is capable of deciphering and performing complex verbal commands.

A flagship worthy spec-sheet to boot

Vivo NEX Ultimate (4)

Coming to the core specs of the device, the Vivo NEX Ultimate gets the top-tier Snapdragon 845 processor driving the performance. The chipset is further backed by 8GB RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage. Moving on to the imaging, the flagship gets a dual-camera module featuring a 12-megapixel primary camera accompanied by a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The camera setup has been equipped with 4-axis image stabilisation to offer smoother pictures and videos. Vivo has also utilised a dedicated CS43199+SSM6322 audio chip with 7.1-channel 3D audio to offer better output. Lastly, the smartphone boots Android 8.1 Oreo and is powered by a beefy 4,000mAh battery.

All in all, the Vivo NEX Ultimate is packed with innovative features like elevating selfie camera and an impressive screen-to-body ratio. Now if only if it makes it way to the Indian market…
