Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced its plans to introduce spectrum audit that would keep an eye on telecom operators and see whether they are using the spectrum efficiently or not, as it is a very scarce resource, said TRAI chairman JS Sarma. He expects the audit to start within 3-4 months time. “We also plan to do a review on readiness of the portability of all telcos within a week or 10 days,” added Sarma. Private telcos are prepared for number portability but, according to him, TRAI needs to get an update from some smaller telcos. Number Portability is a facility by which a user can change the service provider without changing his cell phone number. Sarma stated that the state-run BSNL had some issues related to the portability, we are looking whether it has been solved or not, so that number portability can be implemented from September onwards. In addition, Sarma said that a consultation paper on 4G and long term evolution (LTE) will be made on by September. About 300-500MHZ of additional spectrum is expected to be needed in the future but only 200-300MHZ spectrum is currently available.
