Toshiba Corp has announced that it has a camera module that is practically a photo-editing tool. The module is developed to enable you to refocus any part of a photograph after it is taken. According to sources, the module is stated to be extremely small, and this invention can be attached into the body of smartphones and tablets. The move is to overcome having to focus and lock in subjects prior to shooting a picture. Problems like shaky hands, uncomfortable camera body, poor locking feature and lack of grip, on the camera and weight of the body of the camera are some common factors contributing to imperfect focusing. Yes, improvements and modifications are available through apps providing tools to accentuate and rectify a shot. This new module however comes with the guarantee of raising the bar on photography photo shopping. It is a miniature cube with a clean design measuring only 1 cm square and containing 5,00,000 lenses, each of which is 0.03 millimeter in diameter. The workings of this is inspired and based on that of the compound eye structure found in insects. How it works? Let’s find out. Each lens in the module captures an image that is different resulting in large, complete picture by using original software to combine the 5,00,000 tiny images being produced by the camera. The camera is said to measure the distance to an object and goes by the differences between the small images. This is exactly how two lens cameras function to produce 3D images. The module is made to focus on objects, and thereafter magnifying and superimposing portions which are clear and as picture perfect as possible. This even increases the possibility of focusing on every single part of the image for enhanced detail. Recording videos using this module is also possible. Sources of the Company said that it can be used to “retain the image of a figure in the foreground even while replacing the background.” Toshiba intends on releasing this module successfully by 2013 after a process of finalization. They are confident that it has what it takes to revolutionize post camera ops. Truly, if this is as good as it sounds, smartphone manufacturers and tablet manufacturers will use this module to improve their features. In an era where cameras in smartphones have to mandatory be of high quality, this could be a step in aid to achieving just that. We saw a similar concept in a camera last year; Lytro, a camera which allows focus, or refocus of images already snapped. Lytro works differently to this module by Toshiba. It uses light from all angles, through its innumerable number of microlens, which is intrinsically a sensor that essentially fits many lenses into a small space. So once you take a picture, it can be refocused after transferring it to a computer using additional software. This too was seen as a groundbreaking improvement in photographic technology. We sure hope Toshiba commercializes this brilliant module in 2013 for a refreshing and hands down novel innovation. This module takes technology to a new level in the component segment that is seemingly capable of altering the quality of the phone.
