The monsoons are here and as much as we’re happy about it, it’s not the same with our phones. A splash here or there could accidentally damage your beloved gadget and land you in a soup. Worry not, several phonemakers have started offering water-resistant smartphones that are not afraid of rains or can even survive a dunk in the pool. So if you’re looking to enjoy rains stress-free, then here’s a list of smartphones that will help you get monsoon ready. 

Samsung Galaxy S9 / S9+

Both the Samsung flagships come with a glass-sandwich design with their displays sloping towards the edges. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ sport 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Super AMOLED displays respectively, bearing a resolution of 1,440 x 2,880 pixels. The smartphones come with a dual-aperture capability for the 12-megapixel rear camera, with the S9+ offering a secondary 12MP telephoto lens. For selfies, both the S9 models flaunt 8-megapixel sensors up front. The Exynos 9810 SoCs on the Galaxy S9 and S9+ is accompanied by 4GB and 6GB RAM respectively. For storage, the devices offer 64GB / 128GB / 256GB of built-in memory, which can be topped up further with the use of a microSD card.

Both the phones come with an IP68 dust and water-resistance rating. This means they can withstand being submerged in water of up to 1.5 meters depth for 30 minutes.

Huawei P20 Pro

Following Apple’s iPhone X and other smartphone manufacturers, the P20 Pro offers a cut-out on top of the display. Thankfully, the phone does offer an option to hide the notch. This allows the phone to offer a large display of 6.1-inches with an aspect ratio of 18.7:9, without being unwieldy. Not only does the phone come with a pair of 40MP and 20MP shooters to capture colour and monochrome info respectively, it also offers an additional telephoto lens. Talking about selfies, the smartphone boasts a high-res 24-megapixel sensor at front. Under the hood, the octa-core Kirin 970 processor comes with a clock speed of 2.36GHz, which is supplemented by 6GB of RAM.

The P20 Pro carries an IP67 rating, meaning it can handle submersion in up to one meter of fresh water for 30 minutes.

Apple iPhone X

The flagship from the Cupertino major comes with a bezel-less display, uses AMOLED screen tech and is the very first to ditch the home button in favour of Face ID. The panel measures 5.8-inches and sports a resolution of 2,436 x 1,125 pixels with an 18:9 aspect ratio, a first on an iPhone. The smartphone features 12-megapixel dual cameras, both of which come with Optical Image Stabilisation. For selfie-takers, there is the 7-megapixel front-facing camera. The iPhone X is also among the fastest smartphones in the market thanks to the Apple A11 Bionic chip, working alongside 3GB of RAM. 

The phone does have an IP67 rating, meaning that it will be resilient to the damage caused by accidental spills.

Google Pixel 2 XL

With the Pixel 2 XL, Google has joined the ranks of smartphones with the newer aspect ratio of 18:9. The smartphone’s fascia is dominated by the 6-inch QHD+ display panel. The phone comes with a single rear-facing 12-megapixel unit with f/1.8 aperture, and with the help of Google’s computational photography, it can deliver impressive images across all conditions. The handset offers the portrait mode with the front-facing 8MP snapper too. Coming to performance, the device features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, and comes with 4 gigs of RAM.

The Google Pixel 2 XL is IP67-compatible, allowing it to withstand immersion in up to 1m of water for a maximum of 30 minutes.

Apple iPhone 8 / 8 Plus

While the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus might not differ much from their predecessors, they do come with new colour tones. The iPhone 8’s display measures 4.7-inches diagonally and comes with a resolution of 1,334 x 750 pixels. The iPhone 8 Plus on the other hand, features a 5.5-inches panel with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. While the iPhone 8 has a single 12MP camera with f/1.8 aperture and OIS, the iPhone 8 Plus comes with twin 12-megapixel cameras on the back, one with a 26mm wide angle lens and the other with a 52mm telephoto lens. 

The iPhone 8 duo comes with IP67 certification, making them dust- and waterproof.

Moto X4

The X4 has a 5.2-inch 1080p screen and has an advantage of IP68 certification, making it dust- and water-resistant. The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 630 chipset with a clock speed of 2.2GHz. The 6GB RAM variant comes with 64GB of storage. The selfie camera on the Moto X4 is a 16MP f/2.0 unit. Motorola’s offering features an LED selfie flash to brighten up your images in low light. The strength of the X4 lies on the rear, in the form of a dual-camera setup. You get 12MP + 8MP shooters, with the second one being a wide-angle lens, offering a larger field of view.
