This has been a big week for game launches, with the latest installment of Modern Combat hitting the App Store, along with the all-female sci-fi RPG Revolution 60. There’s also the surreal 3D photo-editing app Matter to check out, and the smart packing list PackPoint that should take some stress off your holiday planning.
Matter (Rs 120)
Matter is a cool new photo-editing app that lets you add surreal 3D effects to your images, with real time shadow loops and reflections. The app gives you a choice of several 3D objects, which you can enhance with opaque, reflective, refractive or translucent effects. You can also adjust the object’s shadow by tweaking position, opacity and length. Your creations can be exported either as images or video loops.
Real Simple Checklist (Free)
Real Simple Checklist is a handy app that will help you get organised. It features over 100 popular checklists, letting you customise a list that’s already available or create your own from scratch. Within your list, you’ll be able to set reminders to complete tasks, and share tasks with family and friends. The app also features handy tips for common tasks.
SignEasy, the popular app that lets you sign documents from your iPhone or iPad, has received a major update in version 5.2.0. The update brings an iOS 7 redesign, and adds a new continuity feature. With this, you’ll be able to start filling out a document, save it as a draft, and pick up where you left off later. You can switch between an iPhone, iPad and even an Android device, since your progress will be saved and synced in the cloud. The update also improves document organisation, and makes navigating documents easier with page thumbnails.
LINE, the free messaging and calling app, has introduced a new Snapchat-like feature called ‘Hidden Chats’. The feature is available in 1-to-1 chats only, and is tucked away in a separate section. You can exchange texts, stickers, images and location and contact info, and set viewing limits of 2 seconds, 10 seconds, 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, or 1 week. After this time, the chat will automatically self destruct.
PackPoint is a smart new packing list that will tell you what to pack for your holiday based on the weather, length of your trip or activities planned. You’ll also be able to add details like the city you’re travelling to, departure date and number of days you’re staying there. PackPoint differentiates lists based on business or leisure, and factors in clothes for warm or cold weather, the willingness to repeat some outfits and access to laundry facilities.
Modern Combat 5: Blackout (Rs 420)
After a long wait, Modern Combat 5: Blackout has finally arrived on iOS. The first-person shooter offers four customisable classes (assault, heavy, recon or sniper) that can be leveled up in either single player or multiplayer mode. Multiplayer mode lets you create a squad and add your friends, and battle it out with other squads. The solo campaign offers several story missions and challenges that span locations like Venice and Tokyo. While playing, you’ll be able to unlock higher-tier weapons by mastering lower-tier ones, use several attachments to customise your perfect weapon, and talk to other players in global or squad chat.
Revolution 60 (Free)
Revolution 60 is a unique new sci-fi RPG for the iPad that combines a strong storyline with an all-female cast. You’ll play Holiday, an assassin who’s on a mission to regain control of an orbital weapons platform. Holiday will frequently interact with other members of her squad and be forced to make choices that will affect the final outcome of the game. The combat involves one-on-one enemy encounters that take place on a grid, and you’ll be able to level up your skill and stunt set as you play. The game is fully voice acted and features animations made with Unreal Engine.
Poptile is a simple puzzle game with a single game mode. Your objective is to match and break tiles of the same colour on the screen. After each turn you play a new line of tiles will be added at the bottom. The game ends when the tiles reach the top of the screen. You get more points if you break a larger clump of tiles, and some moves will set off chain reactions too. The game offers several colour themes, and even has a Colourblind Mode.
The Phantom PI Mission Apparition (Rs 120)
The Phantom PI Mission Apparition is a side-scrolling action adventure game that follows the adorable character PI, who helps ghosts that are being tormented in the afterlife. In the game, PI heads to Ravensmaw Manor, where he must help the ghost of rock-n-roll star Marshall Staxxx who’s being bullied by the evil spirit Baublebelly. The game features several puzzles, 20 levels, over 25 collectible cards and a scrapbook that can hold over 100 collectibles.
Astro Duel (Rs 190)
Astro Duel is a ‘competitive local multiplayer game’ for the iPad where the goal is to control your ship and blast other players into extinction. You can use asteroids and barriers as cover, but you’ll need to avoid death beams or black holes. The game offers a variety of game modes and power ups. If there are only two players, you can play by using onscreen controls on either end of the iPad. For up to four players, the game lets you connect your iPhone or MFi controller. If you have no one to play with, you can also practice against computer-controlled players.

This week, you can download Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run for free as part of Apple’s App of the Week promotion. The endless runner combat game lets you play as Mikey, Leo, Donny and Ralph, and even unlock characters like Casey Jones and April. You’ll race across the rooftops of NYC and battle enemies like the Foot Clan, Kraang and Dimension X.
