Apple has finally confirmed September 9th as the date for its next big event, where you can expect to hear about the next-gen iPhones, as well as iOS 9 and watchOS 2. In the meantime, we’ve shortlisted the best new and updated apps and games on the App Store this week.
Instagram has received a small yet significant update that now allows you to post photos and videos in portrait or landscape orientation, lifting the restriction on its iconic square crop. The update also makes the erstwhile separate filters for photos and videos universal, so you’ll see all the available filters irrespective of whether you’re posting a photo or video. Additionally, you can now adjust the filter intensity for videos.
iPhone users rejoice, because WhatsApp Web is finally available on iOS. You can access WhatsApp’s web interface by going to web.whatsapp.com, on supported browsers that include Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari. On your iPhone, you’ll need to go to WhatsApp > Settings > WhatsApp Web, and scan the QR code that appears on your browser through the app. Provided your computer and iPhone are both connected to the internet, you’ll be able to access and reply to chats, and send images, voice messages and more from your browser window.
Pushbullet’s file-transfer app Portal is now available on the App Store. The app lets you send photos, videos and other files from your computer to your iPhone over a Wi-Fi connection, making transfers of even larger files a fast process. You’ll be able to transfer individual files, multiple files or folders, and browse, open and share the files you’ve received on your iPhone. The Document Provider Extension lets you open received files using other apps on your phone.
infltr (Rs 120)
infltr is a new photo-editing app that claims to give you access to unlimited filters for your photos. Unlike most other photography apps which require you to take the image first and then apply a filter, with infltr all you need to do is point your camera at the scene, and then swipe your finger across viewfinder in any direction to see an infinite number of filters. Once you see something you like, you’ll be able to capture the image from within the app.
Lara Croft GO (Rs 300)
From the creators of Hitman GO comes a new turn-based puzzle adventure based on the iconic tomb raider Lara Croft. In the game, you’ll play Lara herself, as you explore the ruins of an ancient civilisation and uncover the secret behind the Queen of Venom. Along the way, you’ll need to defeat enemies, overcome obstacles and avoid deadly traps. You’ll also get to collect ancient artefacts and unlock new outfits for Lara. The game features simple swipe to move controls, and over 75 levels spread over 5 chapters.
Bullet Boy (Free)
Set in a strange floating world, in Bullet Boy you’ll play a kid who must escape a deadly tornado, while collecting missing pieces of mysterious statues. To move, you’ll need to shoot yourself from cannon to cannon, avoiding obstacles like birds, buildings and machines along the way. The game features over 30 levels with randomly generated sections, as well as unlockable power-ups. The developer has also promised more levels, zones and gameplay in future updates.
Ski Safari 2 (Rs 120)
Endless skiing adventure Ski Safari is back in this much-awaited sequel. In the game, you’ll be able to you race down a mountain using skis, snowboards, ski mobiles, motorbikes or any other vehicle (or animal) of your choice. You’ll be able to pull off stunts like 360 spins, handstands, and snowboard nose-grabs to rack up points. There are three locations to explore – Penguin Peaks, Jurassic Lark and Twister Canyon – as well as gold coins you can collect to upgrade your gear, costumes and vehicles. The game introduces a new multiplayer mode as well.
Breakneck is an endless racing game where you’ll need to avoid alien pursuit by flying your ship as far and as fast as you can. You’ll need to fly through a hostile environment filled with obstacles, collecting essential supplies on the way. The environment resets every day so you’ll always have new areas to explore, and you’ll also be able to unlock boosts and upgrade your ship as you play. The game features daily and weekly missions, weekly tournaments and leaderboards, and phantom ships of your last and best runs, so you can beat your best scores.
