The week that went by was an important one for Apple users, with iOS 9 and Mac OS X El Capitan being unveiled at WWDC. Apple also introduced its new music streaming service, Apple Music, which will be available in India at the end of the month. In the meantime, we’ve rounded up the best new apps and games that have been launched on the App Store, just in time for the weekend. Here’s our list.
Free is an app that helps you let your friends know when you’re available. You can choose from three statuses – Going Out, Flexible or Busy – so that your friends can see what you’re up to. You can customise who can see your status, and how long it’s visible for. The ‘roll call’ feature lets you send out notifications to find out what your friends are up to. The app also features an integrated chat, letting you tag your friends with @mentions and share your location to arrange a meet-up. You can use Free to communicate for anyone in your contact list, and if they don’t have the app installed, they’ll continue to get updates via text messages.
Medicine Reminder by 1mg (Free)
We all need to take medicine at some time or the other, whether it’s for a minor issue or a chronic illness. But when there are multiple doses to take, sometimes of different medicines, it can be tough to keep track. That’s where Medicine Reminder comes in. You can search for medicines through the app’s database and add it your list, along with the required dosage. You’ll be able to set reminders about when to take your pills, choosing durations spanning a few days or even a lifetime. The app also lists missed doses, so that you can consult your doctor about remedial measures.
Vee (Rs 120)
Vee is a fully-featured video app for the iPhone and iPad. The app lets you shoot videos in full 1080p in a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. You can shoot videos in one go, or in multiple clips which can then be reordered and edited. The app features 18 live filters, as well as the ability to add soundtracks. You can shoot in slow-motion up to 240fps or speed up your video 5x times, and then add these effects to an entire clip, or just a small segment. The app lets you work on multiple videos at once, and when you’re ready to share, it will export your video in the background so you can use other apps while you wait.
Threes! Free (Free)
Popular puzzle game Threes! is now available in a free version on the App Store. The app requires you to swipe blocks to create multiples of threes, adding up similar numbers to achieve greater scores. A cast of cute characters and a charming soundtrack adds to its appeal. The easy-to-learn game features just a single gameplay mode, and while the free version does have ads, there are no IAPs to ruin the experience.
Green Ninja: Year of the Frog (Free)
In this action platformer, you play a frog with some mean Kung Fu skills. Using your lethal kick, you’ll have to eliminate all the evil ninjas in each level before you can progress. In some levels you’ll face additional obstacles, whereas others will give you weapons you’ll have to use strategically. The game features simple swipe controls and several levels consisting of small puzzles as well as more difficult challenges.
Try Harder! (Free)
An endless runner game with a dangerous twist, in Try Harder! you’ll need to run, jump and glide across a path filled with never-ending death traps. Along the way, you’ll also be able to collect power-ups like double jumps and glides. In a particularly morbid twist, you’ll leave a corpse of yourself behind every time you die, and you’ll be able to use these as platforms in subsequent attempts.
Transistor (Rs 620)
Popular PS4 and PC action RPG Transistor has now been ported to iOS. In the game, you’ll play Red, a singer who has been rendered mute and left in possession of Transistor, a glowing sword with the ability to talk. Equipping the sword with an array of possible functions, you’ll need to defeat the strange creatures that populate the abandoned city of Cloudwalk. The game features intuitive touch controls, support for MFi controllers and beautiful isometric visuals.
App of the Week
Free for one week on the App Store, Slayin is an endless game where you’ll need to choose your hero and slay as many monsters as possible, levelling up your abilities, spells and weapons on the way.
