New year, new weekly feature. We’re happy to announce that every Saturday, we’ll be bringing you a roundup of the best iOS apps and games. This week, there are plenty of new games to choose from, including two popular sequels. Additionally, some old favourites have been updated with new features and iOS 7 designs. Read on for the first installment.
Popular fitness app Fitbit has been updated with MobileTrack, which allows it to accurately track activity like steps taken, distance travelled, calories burned and active minutes directly from the iPhone 5s. The M7 motion coprocessor on the iPhone 5s eliminates the need to wear the fitness band, but older iOS devices can still sync their activity data from Fitbit Flex for real-time stats, while enjoying the redesigned interface.
Popular job search and company review website Glassdoor has just updated its iOS app. The iPad version has been revamped with an all-new iOS 7 design, while the iPhone version lets you submit your wage to Glassdoor directly from the app. The latest update has also tweaked the search tool to allow searching for jobs by company.
Shoots & Leaves lets you turn your photos into links. It is essentially meant for photos that are to-do items. When you snap a picture from within the app, it gets uploaded onto a hosting service. After that, you can decide if you want to send it as a text or email, create a reminder, open it in Safari or copy it to the clipboard. You can also create custom templates, depending on how you want to use the image.
Detective Grimoire was originally a popular flash game, but has managed to make the transition to mobile through a crowd-funded Kickstarter campaign. The mystery adventure game tasks you with solving a murder by a mythical marshland creature called Boggy. During the course of the game you will interact with various swamp creatures, while listening to an award-nominated soundtrack.
The second installment of popular physics-based game, Feed Me Oil is now ready to download. The new game has been revamped with vibrant new visuals and realistic physics that react to ice, wind and water. You’ll have access to new tools like windmills and fans, which can be dragged around to solve puzzles. There are four chapters to complete, with new gifts to unlock every day.
Five years after the popular iPhone racing game was launched, developer True Axis has released a sequel. Jet Car Stunts 2 offers 120 levels, seven cars and four game modes. The cars are equipped with jet engines, allowing you to ride on floating tracks and fly through the air. The game is available as a free download, with in-app purchases to unlock additional racing tracks.
Lyne is a new calming puzzle game, which combines challenging problems with soothing music and a minimalist design. There are hundreds of pre-built puzzles, with new ones being generated daily. The premise of the game is to connect various points on a grid. It is a paid game, but developer Thomas Bowker promises it will be free of ads and in-app purchases.
Sonic the Hedgehog fans have a new game in store. The popular racing game for Xbox and PS3 has been adapted to the mobile platform, adding daily and weekly challenges. You’ll race across land, sea and air, changing between between cars, boats and planes mid-race. The game offers Facebook integration, and also supports made-for-iOS controllers.
The popular endless runner game, Subway Surfers, was recently updated with all new features. The Subway Surfers World Tour, which introduces new locations every month, has added the city of Mumbai to its list. Apart from the regular characters, you’ll be able to add the athletic champion Jay to your collection. The latest update also brings new outfits for characters Tasha and Frank.
