Messaging apps seem to be leading the next tech revolution. The very fact that almost all companies are trying to offer smart assistants which can do your work for you by simple chatting is quite intriguing. Microsoft has also jumped in on the fray with its Chatbots for Skype, as revealed during its annual Build conference. Perhaps that explains why we have quite a few messaging apps in this week’s Android apps edition. There are a couple of games too, so read on to find out our top picks for your Android smartphone.

BlackBerry Messenger has received a major update last week, with the most important being the fact that some premium features are now available free of charge to users. These include timed messages, message retract, private chats, etc. Other new features include the ability to forward messages from one chat to the other, the ability to mute notifications in a group, improved voice calling experience, and more. Users will also be able to scroll through all the pictures shared within a chat or a group.

The popular photo-sharing social network has allowed users to share videos for quite a while now. Until now though, you could only share videos up to 15 seconds in length. With the latest update, Instagram now lets you share videos up to 60 seconds.

While there are a multitude of email clients, MailTime makes emailing as easy as text messaging. It displays cluttered email threads as clean chat bubbles. The app works with popular emailing services such as Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, AOL, etc. and sorts emails into chats and newsletters. You can also send various attachments as well as voice email messages. It also shows group conversations like a group chat, making it easier to add or delete anyone from them.

SnapchatSnapchat {Update} (Free)

The latest version of Snapchat brings the Chat 2.0 update, which includes the ability to send audio notes, gifs, chats, emojis and audio and video chats. With the new interface, switching between audio, video and messaging chats has become seamless. Another new feature is auto-advance stories, which automatically begins playing the next story after you finish watching the current one.

WhatsAppWhatsApp {Update} (Free)

WhatsApp is getting a mention in our weekly app series quite often, and not without good reason. The app, which recently crossed a milestone of one billion users, is constantly adding new features and refreshing itself to become even more useful. With the latest update, it has updated its age-old camera interface. Now, it matches the Material Design ethos. The interface is fairly simple, with the option to capture the image, switch to the front camera or toggle flash, and record a video by long-pressing the shutter button.

Marvel Avengers Alliance 2Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2 (Free)

The sequel to the Avengers Alliance title, the game has come in just before the release of Captain America: Civil War movie in May. In this turn-based game, you need to assemble your team of Avengers with famous characters like Daredevil, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, etc. against super villains. You’d also be facing a mysterious series of galactic collisions, known as Incursions, which are threatening the fate of Earth. As you progress in the game, you’d be able to expand your team and their powers.
