The month of September was a launch galore for next-gen smartphones. It started on a good note with various manufacturers announcing their offerings at IFA in Berlin, and many other brands also unveiling their devices during the entire month. We saw the world’s first smartphone with a 4K display coming from the stable of Sony – the Xperia Z5 Premium (first impressions), along with its mainstream siblings. While Apple took covers off its latest iPhones, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which bring upgraded hardware and innovative features like 3D touch, Google also followed the bifurcation strategy started by many phone makers, as it showcased the Nexus 5X (first impressions) and Nexus 6P (first impressions).

Many of these smartphons will be making their way to our shores this month. However, what remains to be seen is whether they are able to capture the users’ attention. That’s why, every month we bring to you top 20 mobile phones searched by users on 91mobiles, as it suggests which devices are popular. So, if you’re wondering which phones users looked for in September, then read on to find out.

Top 5

The Lenovo K3 Note (review | FAQs) may very well become the most popular phone of the year, as it has been able to remain at the top spot since May. Following the K3 Note is another budget phablet, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, which has jumped three positions. Interestingly, both the third and fourth places are held by Samsung’s budget offerings, the Galaxy J7 (first impressions) and J5 (review) respectively. At the fifth seat is the new entrant, which actually is the more powerful version of the Redmi Note 2, dubbed Redmi Note 2 Prime.

The complete list

Usually, the top 20 list each month shows a lot of ups and downs, with several fresh faces making their way in at the expense of other devices. However, the month of September turned out to be a surprise, as most phones were able to remain among the top 20 devices with only three debutants. Let’s take a look at the entire list, where we have also mentioned the change in the rankings of the handsets from August, their OS, price range and month of launch.

Hits and misses

While there aren’t many new faces in the list, let’s take a closer look at the ones which managed to make an entry in the coveted list.

New entrants

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Prime: 5th position

Let’s get one thing clear – there are very few chances that the handset will land on our shores due to the the lawsuit against Xiaomi by Ericsson. Having said that, we are surely hoping that it comes to India, as it seems to be another budget blockbuster, with its large 5.5-inch full HD display, MediaTek’s Helio X10 octa-core processor and 2GB RAM.

Motorola Moto X Play: 11th position

Instead of following up its flagship Moto X series with just one device, Motorola actually opted for a smart strategy by splitting the range into two offerings. The Moto X Play is the affordable version of the latest Moto X pair, and features a large 5.5-inch display. Unlike most phones, the Moto X Play has a beefy battery, which as per our review, manages to knock out the competition with its runtime.

Intex Aqua Trend: 17th position

Leading Indian manufacturer has also jumped on the 4G bandwagon, and the Aqua Trend comes across as a stylish offering that’s future-proof thanks to the LTE support and 64-bit capabilities. The affordable smartphone also sports a generous 3,000mAh battery.

The exits

  • YU Yuphoria
  • Micromax Canvas Nitro
  • HTC Desire 620G

Trend analysis

Xiaomi is the most popular brand followed by Samsung

With the past few top 20 editions, we’re seeing a consolidation happening in the space with respect to the number of brands present. The same trend continued in the month of September as only eight brands are there. Xiaomi leads the race with five of its offerings, though it’s interesting to note that the two of its devices – the Redmi Note 2 and Note 2 Prime aren’t available to buy in India. Samsung follows the Chinese smartphone maker with four of its phones present in the top 20 list.

It’s also noteworthy that with the popularity of Chinese brands, global giants like HTC and Sony have suffered the most as they don’t even have a single handset featured in the list.

Mid-range segment gaining popularity

Price segmentation of the top 20 mobile phone suggests consumers’ buying preferences, and it seems that there’s a slight uptick in the price bands they are looking for their next potential purchase. There are eight devices in the lower mid-range category (devices priced between Rs 10,000 and 20,000), although it’s being closely followed by the affordable segment (phones priced between Rs 5,000 and 15,000).
