Top 20 mobile phones in India in May 2016: 91mobiles insights

“Here are the top devices which users searched for in the month of May”

We’re almost halfway into the year 2016, and the Indian smartphone market has already witnessed a lot of phone launches. Not just budget devices, but flagships from almost all brands, and of course, offerings from quite a few brands that have debuted in the country. Buzz aside, the important thing is which of the new offerings struck a chord with the consumers. That’s why, every month, we take a look at the top 20 handsets on the basis of their popularity on 91mobiles. While one might argue that it’s not the actual sale data, it does serve as a reflection of the ever-changing preferences of Indian consumers.

So, without further ado, let’s see which phones garnered the most mind share in the month of May.

Top 5

Interestingly, almost all table-toppers from the month of April have been able to remain their spots among the top five smartphones. Xiaomi’s VFM offering, the 3GB RAM variant of the Redmi Note 3 (review) continues to lead the charge, and it’s worth noting that its 2GB RAM model is also there and sits at the fifth spot. LeEco’s Le 1s (review) seems to have gained popularity again as it rose four places to reach the second place. Dropping one spot each are the Samsung Galaxy J7 (first impressions) and Lenovo K4 Note (review), which are at third and fourth seating respectively.

The complete list

The list of top 20 mobile phones in India follows the table-toppers, with most devices able to maintain their rankings. In fact, there are only two fresh faces in the list. Along with the ranking of the phones, we’ve also mentioned their change in ranking compared to April, their price band and the month of launch in the Indian market.

Hits and misses

New entrants

Lenovo ZUK Z1: 7th position

Chinese brand Lenovo has brought its sub-brand ZUK’s first smartphone, the Z1 (review) to India. While it might seem slightly dated considering its old processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 801), it has been priced extremely well and brings forth some impressive specifications. It’s built around a 5.5-inch FHD display and offers 3 gigs of RAM along with 64GB of memory on board. It’s fuelled by a beefy 4,000mAh battery.

vivo V3 Max: 14th position

The company introduced its latest smartphones, the v3 and v3 Max in April, but it seems that their popularity has started to pick up, possibly due to its promotions with the brand ambassador Ranvir Singh. The vivo V3 Max (first impressions) has some powerful hardware under the hood, thanks to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 617 CPU paired with 4GB of RAM. Other specs include a 13-meg primary snapper and a 5MP selfie camera and 3,000mAh battery.

The exits

  • Lenovo Vibe X3
  • Samsung Galaxy On5

Trend analysis

The Chinese domination seems to be ending

There was a time when most devices among the top 20 smartphones were from Chinese companies. But that seems to be changing now, with Samsung back in its A-game, having as many eight of its devices in the list. It’s distantly followed by Lenovo with half the number of phones (four). The other brands listed are present with just one or two handsets each.

Powerful performance, without burning your pocket

One important reason for the rise of budget smartphones is the fact that they have managed to offer superb specifications in an affordable package, something which was reserved for premium phones only. Case in point: there are as many as nine handsets in the list that offer beefy 3 gigs of RAM or more. The processors in these devices are also quite popular, with either six or eight cores tuned at decent clock speeds.

We’ll surely be back next month to see if these rankings remain the same or whether highly-anticipated phones like the OnePlus 3 manage to shake things up.
