TI announces 1.5GHz Dual-core Processors for Smartphones!

Battle for Dual-Core Mobile Processors is on! Texas Instruments increased the pace of innovation with the announcement of OMAP4440 SoC (latest OMAP 4 variant) housing two ARM Cortex A9 MP Cores @ 1.5 GHz each! The GPU in the chipset is the best in class in the form of PowerVR SGX 540. This GPU is the fastest Graphical processor out there in the market. Let’s see how this translates in terms of end-user benefits: 50% increase in overall performance. 33% reduction in webpage load time. 25% increase in overall graphics performance. TI will begin sampling the OMAP 4440 in Q1 2011 and possibly begin the production towards second-half of the year. So, we have 4 main manufacturers competing in the dual-core smartphone processor space. Samsung, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and NVidia. Samsung announced about dual-core Orion chipset. Qualcomm announced MSM8960 dual-core chipset. TI now with this OMAP4440 and ofcourse NVIDIA with their Tegra2 chipset. Among these Samsung’s orion appears to be superior since orion improves the performance of GPU 3-4x. NVidia tegra2 will be the first to ship to the market. Already few tablets in the form of Motorola Motopad, Motorola Olympus have been using Tegra2 and are slated for first quarter release in 2011. All the above chipsets are based on ARM Cortex A9 MPCore design and architecture. Intel has announced recently about their Moorestown design which on paper is far superior than A9 architecture. But there is not even a single SoC based on moorestown design yet and therefore no tablets or smartphones announced yet. The space is heating up..and the year 2011 is the year of dual-core smartphones!
