The rise of customised smartphones

After the immense growth in the smartphone industry over the past few years, we seem to have entered a phase where there is very little to separate between phones available. There’s hardly any choice for you, if you want to stand out. And, that is where the concept of customised smartphones comes in. These devices add a character to a plain old device, thereby making it a prized possession for the user. Furthermore, they become the attention-grabber wherever you go.

Talking of customised phones, the latest entry in this category is the OPPO F1s Diwali Edition smartphone, which adds more spark to an already impressive device with a 16MP front camera. The limited edition smartphone comes in a stylish packing studded with the glow of Diwali celebrations. Moreover, the back panel of the device comes with a gilded glare of a Diwali pattern, along with a joint laser signature from two of the most celebrated youth icons in India – Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor… now that’s saying something. And, if you’re worried that your prized signatures would get erased over prolonged usage then fret not – thanks to the use of laser technology OPPO guarantees that your favourite actors’ signatures would remain intact for years.

In the past, such offerings were only available globally, with major brands like Samsung and Apple going down this road. Although, things can get a little out of hand sometimes, just like the Rs 7.5 lakh price tag of the Gold iPhone 6s, thanks to the gold finish and use of precious gemstones.

On the other hand, Samsung had Marvel fans interested with its S6 edge Iron man edition, which boasted of a beautiful golden and red hue, as well as a completely customised theme for the phone software. The Korean giant has a knack of releasing special editions of its smartphones. This year, the company had something in store for the DC fans as well, with the Batman edition of its Galaxy S7 edge. And just to keep up with the Olympic spirit, the S7 edge was also greeted with an Olympic Edition, which was also gifted to the Olympic participants by Samsung.

Talking about sports, earlier this year, OPPO brought the FCB edition of the F1 Plus, which comes with a gorgeous design sporting the classic colours of the FC Barcelona – red and blue. Additionally, it has the exquisite logo of FCB plated with 18-karat gold.

Besides these global smartphones, it’s interesting to note that OPPO is among the very few brands that have introduced localised designs, especially for Indian consumersIn March this year, the brand unveiled an ICC WT20 edition of its F1 smartphone to coincide with the T20 cricket extravaganza.

This indicates that the brand has always been at the forefront of the trend of such smartphones, especially for Indian users. The company has regularly tapped into the spirits of its Indian customers, be it T20 World Cup craze or the festive spirits of Diwali. We hope to see more brands tapping on this opportunity.

We’ve come a long way since the first limited edition smartphone was announced. Along the way, we’ve witnessed some interesting handsets, be it the HTC One M8 Captain America edition, or the HTC One M9 Ink edition. Often brands look at major movies and characters for inspiration, but there are some like OPPO that have made some interesting limited edition smartphones especially for us Indian folks, which also become excellent gifting options for the festive season. Customised smartphones have, and always will be, a prized possession for their users.
