Ever since the release of the Sony Xperia Z1, Sony has made quite a name for itself in the flagship game. Through the years, this Japanese OEM has delivered several generations of premium smartphones adorning the ‘Z’ family name and with the MWC 2016 just lurking around the corner, the arrival of yet another Sony flagship is almost inevitable.
In this rumour roundup, we’ll be talking about what to expect from the forthcoming flagship from Sony, the Sony Xperia Z6 (and it’s possible variants).
Sony’s recent and much-needed overhaul to its premium line of ‘Z’ devices has increased expectations from the Sony Xperia Z6.
It’ll be a safe bet to say that the Sony Xperia Z6 won’t feature significant improvements over the Sony Xperia Z5, but will be sticking to the same plane as it’s predecessor when it comes to design and physical appearance.
The Sony Xperia Z6 boasting the same design as its predecessor may not be a bad idea, as the matte finish at the back would grant the phone a better grip without taking much away from the appealing looks. Not to forget, it’ll make the smartphone much less of a fingerprint magnet.
Talking about the design, one can’t forget about the conveniently placed fingerprint sensor in the Sony Xperia Z5 and it’ll be quite likely that the forthcoming model from Sony would flaunt the same with noticeable improvements.
With Sony’s recent comments regarding QHD displays, it’s safe to say the OEM will be sticking to good old 1080p resolution panel for, at least, the standard variant of the Sony Xperia Z6.
As for the inclusion of another 4K display on one of the variants, going by the rather below-average performance of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium on the market, that seems highly unlikely. Although, it’ll be great move by Sony to include a QHD panel on at least one of the higher variants, as now the QHD displays have become quite standard on most flagships. There’s no doubt about the fact that Sony will be including the Triluminous and X-Reality engine technology in its upcoming flagship. It’ll be a treat to see some of the higher resolutions to sync with the Triluminous feature.
That doesn’t stop there. According to a recent AnTuTu benchmark leak, it is rumoured that the Sony Xperia Z6 will incorporate a pressure sensitive display much like the one seen on the Apple iPhone 6S which would be a treat to have if it is utilised to it’s maximum potential.
Much like the previous generations of Sony flagships, the Sony Xperia Z6 will also be equipped with the very best of Qualcomm processors, this time it being the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip.
Almost all the variants of the Sony Xperia Z6 will boast the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 except for one, that is the rumored ‘Mini’ 4-inch variant which would be utilising a Qualcomm Snapdragon 620 according to recent leaks.

The camera prowess is probably the best thing that the ‘Z’ line of Sony devices can boast of. The Sony Xperia Z5 was a witness to various enhancements when it came to shooting capabilities. The camera sensor was bumped up to a impressive 23MP from a 21MP coupled with several significant software tweaks, leaving the Sony Xperia Z6 with little room for much-needed improvements. This possibly means that the Sony Xperia Z6 won’t be exhibiting huge changes over it’s predecessor but would be going with minor enhancements here and there.
Starting from the Sony Xperia Z1, Sony has had a tendency to fabricate various other variants in the wake of its standard flagship device.
Thus, it makes it a no-brainer to say that the upcoming Sony flagship would also follow the same trend, which is backed up by the innumerable leaks regarding the phone.
As per the rumours, The Sony Xperia Z6 family will consist of the standard Sony Xperia Z6, a compact version dubbed the Sony Xperia Z6 Compact, a larger variant of the standard model, being called the Sony Xperia Z6 Plus, an even larger edition of the standard Z6 model, titled as the Sony Xperia Z6 Ultra and then a new and rather unexpected entry onto the list… an even smaller version of the Sony Xperia Z6 Compact, branded as Sony Xperia Z6 Mini which is rumoured to feature a 4-inch display.
The Sony Xperia Z6 will be a smartphone to look out for and the family should include various variants providing the consumer with a lot of choice. The phone is almost assured to be a powerhouse when it will come to crunching numbers on paper and will be featuring an innovative design and several little improvements over its predecessor.
Although almost confirmed, these bits of information should be taken with just a grain of salt until the actual unveiling which should be at the MWC 2016.
