“The new leaked patent could be the design of an upcoming flagship from Samsung”
With the iPhone X (review), Apple started a revolution of sorts with the notch display design. Now, most Android smartphone makers have already started incorporating the unusual 19:9 aspect ratio and the display cutout at the top in their offerings. However, the rival brand – Samsung stuck to its guns and continued making flagships with premium glass sandwich design and the 18:9 bezel-less form factor. That is, until now. A new patent from Samsung has been uncovered on the Internet, which shows a notch display design and a horizontally-stacked dual camera module.
In the leaked design patent, we can see a quintessential Samsung design with 3.5mm audio jack, USB Type-C port and speaker grille at the bottom, and SIM tray at the top. The drawing also reveals the taller 19:9 display with a notch at the top, which seems to be smaller than that on the iPhone X. The notch can be seen housing the earpiece, camera, and a host of other sensors. Further, we can see the display curving on the sides like the Galaxy S and Note series of smartphones. There is also no chin visible in the patent design, which is something that all Android manufacturers have retained.
Another deviation from the standard Samsung design is the placement of rear camera module. While Samsung’s dual cameras till date have been vertically stacked in the middle, the new patent design has them horizontally placed in the top left corner like other Chinese handset makers. Further, there is no Bixby button and fingerprint scanner visible in the patent. This could mean that Samsung will go for an iPhone X like face ID security hardware and Bixby will be made completely voice-activated.
It is being speculated that this could be the upcoming Galaxy Note 9. However, this is just a patent design and often times, patents do not make it to the real life. So we advise you to these images with a grain of salt.
