“The JioPhone users will have to update their phone’s software first, and then install Google Maps from JioStore”
Just a couple of days ago, at the 41st AGM, Reliance Jio introduced the second version of its affordable 4G and VoLTE-enabled JioPhone (first impressions). The new JioPhone 2 arrived with a fresh new QWERTY keyboard-toting design, apart from native support for a few immensely popular social networking apps including WhatsApp, FaceBook, and YouTube. It appears that the company isn’t forgetting about the first-gen JioPhone, and has just rolled out an important software update for the phone, which brings support for Google Maps.
Yes, you read that right… Google Maps now works on the first-gen JioPhone. This version of Google Maps is built specially for KaiOS, which powers both the JioPhone devices. To get the app, users will first have to update the KaiOS to its latest version on their JioPhones. Then, they can go to JioStore app platform to download Google Maps. The navigation app should be available out of the box with the JioPhone 2, when it commercially launches in the near future.
Google Maps for JioPhone offers basic functionalities. The app lets you find places, get directions, explore the surrounding map, check traffic, or check bike routes. We’re expecting Reliance, in partnership with Google, to release a better version of Google Maps in the near future.
