“The R17 is the first smartphone in the world to come with the latest Snapdragon 670 processor”
OPPO has pulled the wraps off from its latest smartphone, the OPPO R17, by listing the device on its Chinese website for preorders. Even though the handset has been spotted earlier in the form of leaks, the Chinese brand managed to usher a surprise with its newest launch. Not only it packs in the most recent processor from Qualcomm — the Snapdragon 670 — but it also features a small notch up top, which will also be available on OPPO’s forthcoming handset in India, the F9 Pro. So if you are wondering what all makes OPPO’s latest offering special, let’s take a closer look at all the novelties that the R17 has to offer.
A large display with a ‘Teardrop’ notch
Large displays seem to be the order of the day, and the OPPO R17 is no different. The handset comes equipped with a 6.4-inch FHD+ display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. It’s interesting to see that the notch on the OPPO R17 has been reduced to a smaller size, thanks to its teardrop design — which not looks better but is less distracting too. The 91.5 percent screen-to-body ratio also deserves a shout out.
The first device with Corning Gorilla 6 protection
Display protection is one of the smartphone traits that we cannot ignore. The OPPO R17 offers the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection, which is touted to be 2.5x better than the Gorilla Glass 5. The phone’s display wouldn’t break easily with accidental drops. So if you are looking forward to buying the R17, be assured that it comes with one of the best display protection in the world.
In-Display fingerprint sensor
After Vivo, it is OPPO’s turn to add an under-display fingerprint scanner to its devices. The in-display fingerprint sensors are aimed at being ergonomically better and also help save space as there is no need to install a separate fingerprint sensor unit. We have already witnessed the in-display fingerprint at work on the Vivo X21 (review) and there is no reason why the one on the OPPO R17 will be any different.
The first smartphone with the Snapdragon 670 SoC
The OPPO R17 has another first under its belt as it draws power from Qualcomm’s recently-announced Snapdragon 670 chipset. The Snapdragon 670 Mobile Platform not only boasts better performance but also offers superlative AI features. Spec-wise, the chip offers two high-performance cores tuned at 2,0GHz, and six efficient cores clocked at 1.7GHz. The 10nm SoC is paired with 8 gigs of RAM to ensure buttery-smooth performance.
OPPO has fitted the R17 with a dual rear camera module that consists of a 16-megapixel shooter and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The selfie camera is a 25-megapixel Sony IMX576 unit with an aperture of f/2.0. Needless to say, the setup is quite capable and it also offers a banquet of AI-backed features, including the portrait mode and other selfie-enhancing features.
A powerful battery with VOOC support
The OPPO R17 comes with a generous 3,500mAh battery. But in case it requires a juice, the smartphone comes with the brand’s famous VOOC technology. The tech delivers higher current to charge the battery very quickly. In fact, VOOC charging mostly fares better than other fast charging technology when it comes to the 0-100 figures. The company claims that the R17 can offer two hours of talk time with just five minutes of charge.
The OPPO R17 is available in Streamer Blue and Neon Purple colours and the pre-orders will start from August 18th. However, there’s no word yet about the India launch or the China price as well.
