“The F5 is the first smartphone from OPPO to ship with a bezel-less design”
The smartphone industry is as diverse as its buyers. While some might look for a smartphone with phenomenal battery life, others might just factor in the camera specifications before making a purchase. However, this year, most buyers are inclining towards smartphones which ship with minimal bezels. A trend which was started with LG’s G6 (review) back in February has now become one of the most sought-after features. We’ve already seen plenty of iterations of bezel-less designs and the latest addition comes from Chinese giant OPPO. The company recently launched the OPPO F5, which besides catering to the selfie-centric audience, now offers minimum bezels on the fascia. We managed to get our hands on a unit and here are our first impressions on the same.
From the back, you’d be hard-pressed to differentiate between the design of the OPPO F5 and some other smartphones from the company. While the fingerprint sensor has been repositioned at the back to accommodate a massive 6-inch FHD+ panel inside the shell of a 5.5-incher, the smartphone looks unmistakably like an OPPO product. That said, we do feel that the device looks rather stunning and the F5’s metallic finish does well to mask it off as a much more expensive offering. As far as the placement of the ports and buttons are concerned, you’ll find the power button and an ejectable tray for holding SIM cards and a microSD card positioned on the right spine. The volume rocker takes up room on the left side of the phone.
You will be able to connect your 3.5mm headphones via a port present at the bottom which is flanked by a speaker grill and a micro-USB port. As we mentioned previously, the fingerprint sensor is now present at the back of the smartphone and much like every other OPPO smartphone, the sensor on the F5 is lightning fast too.
The USP of the OPPO F5 is that it’s the first smartphone by the company to ship with a bezel-less design. The handset gets a 6-inch full HD+ display which packs in a total of 1,080 x 2,160 pixels. During the brief time we spent with the smartphone, we didn’t have any issues with the display panel. The viewing angles felt great and the sunlight legibility is excellent as well.
For performance, the smartphone ships with a MediaTek MT6763T Helio P23 octa-core processor which works in tandem with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. While we are yet to test the F5 under heavy load, jumping in and out of applications was a smooth experience on the smartphone. Launcher animations were being rendered smoothly and we didn’t come across any instances of lag or stutter during our brief time with the device. Make sure to stay tuned for our full review where we will tell you how the smartphone fares in benchmarks and gaming.
For optics, the OPPO F5 ships with a pair of 16MP and 20MP sensors on the back and the front respectively. As expected, the smartphone managed to impress us with its selfie shooter, but we will be testing the phone’s shooting capabilities in much more detail during our full review. The F5 is fuelled by a 3,200mAh battery and boots Android Nougat out of the box with a skin of Colour OS on top.
Overall, the OPPO F5 is a worthy successor to the F3 smartphone, and at the price of Rs Rs 19,990, it does manage to stand out from the competition. The Vivo V7+ (review) is its closest rival, but OPPO’s offering trumps it with a higher-res display. We’ll surely be testing out the smartphone further to see how well it fares in day-to-day usage, so stay tuned.
