“If you consider only the look and feel of the device, it can easily be mistaken for a much more expensive smartphone”
Oplus as a brand is fairly new to the Indian market, with only one product, the XonPad 7 Android tablet, to its name. However, the company recently launched its first Android smartphone, the Oplus XonPhone 5, adding a new product category to its line-up. Even though there are a very limited number of products from the brand, the company has tried to offer an exciting proposition with its first smartphone by offering a bundle of features, premium looks and attractive pricing. So without further ado, let’s move on to the unboxing of the Oplus XonPhone 5 to see what you get inside the retail box.
The XonPhone 5 comes inside dual layered packaging comprising of a cardboard sleeve, which has to be removed to expose the main box containing the device and accessories. The first thing you notice after opening the box is the main device unit itself, which is carefully wrapped inside a protective plastic cover. In addition, the device comes with the scratch guard applied on the device, which is bound to be a great help for users.
Tucked away underneath the device, you’ll find the usual set of accessories including the wall charger, USB cable and the audio headset, covered with a cardboard flap. As for special or bundled accessories, there are none supplied inside the box, so for those who like having their smartphones covered up inside a case or a shell, they will have to raid the market for something compatible with the device because of its non-standard size.
This concludes the unboxing of the Oplus XonPhone 5, now let’s take a first-hand look at the device itself.
Pitted against the Moto E (review) and the Micromax Unite 2 (review), the XonPhone 5 offers a similar value for money quotient while offering some impressive looks as well. The device is available in silver, grey and gold colour options, and we have the grey colour option with us. The front remains the same for all variants, with only the rear cover dressed in different hues. The smartphone is slightly heavier in terms of overall weight, tipping the scales at 170 grams. However, it’s quite slim, with the screen size of 5-inches making one-handed usage easy.
The front of the device gets a flush finish, with capacitive Android keys at the bottom. On the sides, the smartphone features brushed metal strips held together with steel screws, with empart a premium look. The rear panel gets a textured, matte finish, which is a definite welcome as it masks smaller scratches that accumulate after regular use.
The device’s display sports a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels and has been constructed using IPS technology to offer optimum balance between colour reproduction and brightness levels. In addition, it also gets One Glass Solution (OGS) treatment, which offers better and sharper images. The display seemed impressive during our first experience, but we’ll have the details in our upcoming full review.
At the back, the smartphone gets an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with an LED flash, and in the front, there is a 2-megapixel camera provided. To power the handset, Oplus has made use of a quad-core MediaTek MT6582 processor running at 1.3Ghz, the same chipset that powers the Micromax Unite 2. Assisting the processor 1GB of RAM, coupled with a generous 16GB of internal storage. The hardware combo offers ample muscle to easily take on most present day apps, but we’ll save our comments on performance for later.
Overall, the Oplus XonPhone 5 is a good-looking Android smartphone packed with features, and we’ll be testing how it performs in the real world over the next few days. Stay tuned for our detailed review, coming up soon.
