Nokia has a whiz-bang of announcements at its just ended Nokia World 2013 press event at Abu Dhabi. It launched new devices in its smart feature phones under the ‘Asha’ brand and ‘Lumia’ smartphones running on Windows Phone 8 platform. Apart from the hardware, Nokia also announced some new apps for these devices along with the information about some major apps from third party developers. So, Let’s get down to the roundup:

The Triads: Nokia Asha 500, Nokia Asha 502 and Nokia Asha 503

Nokia Asha

Following up to the Nokia Asha 501 unveiled in May, Nokia has launched three more Asha phones. The devices feature a new and bolder design which is encased in a transparent crystal case giving them an eye-popping design. The vibrant hues like Red, Green, Blue, etc. add to their attraction.

The cheapest of the three, Asha 500 sports a 2.8” capacitive touchscreen with a 2MP camera at back, and single and easy swap dual SIM variants. Asha 502 is a dual SIM phone fitted with a 3-inch capacitive display and a 5 MP rear camera with LED flash. The best of the three is Asha 502 having a 3-inch screen protected by Gorilla Glass and 5 MP primary camera with LED flash. Asha 503 is also available in two variants- single SIM and easy swap dual SIM.

In terms of internals, they are quite similar as all of them come with a 64 MP RAM and expandable memory supporting up to 32 GB micro SD card. Asha 503 also comes with a 3G network support, while both Asha 500 and Asha 502 supports only 2G networks. For connectivity, all of them have Bluetooth 3.0 with Slam to share and Wi-Fi.

They are loaded with the updated Asha platform. The Fastlane feature which allowed users to see their past, present and future in a separate screen, can now be customized. This means that the users will be able to define which apps will show up on Fastlane. Nokia has also introduced some new swipe gestures providing quick access to camera, gallery social sharing, etc.

Big Brother(s): Nokia Lumia 1320 and Nokia Lumia 1520

Nokia Lumia 1520

Nokia has finally entered in the large screen size devices with not just one, but two ‘phablets’. The Lumia 1520 is its flagship device with top of the line hardware. It flaunts a 6 inch display with Full HD Resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2 GHz accompanied by a 2 GB RAM. It’s no slouch in camera department either with a 20.7 MP PureView camera. It has a beefier 3400 mAh non-removable battery which supports Wireless charging.

Nokia Lumia 1320

Giving company to the 1520 is the Lumia 1320 sporting same 6” display, however, with lower resolution of 720p. It is powered by a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor coupled with 1 GB RAM. At the back, it has a 5 MP camera, while the VGA camera at front is handy for video calling purposes. A battery of 3400 mAh fuels the device.

On software side of things, they run on the recently announced Windows Phone 8 Update 3, which brings the customizability of live tiles to the user. Making the good use of large screen, users can add up to three columns of live tiles.

Nokia’s first tablet: Nokia Lumia 2520

Nokia Lumia 2520

The last device in the Nokia’s launch was definitely not the least (in terms of size!). Nokia has announced a full size tablet running on Windows RT 8.1 with the display size of 10.1-inches (resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels). It is heavily inspired from the Lumia phones when it comes to design and colors. Underneath the hood, the tablet is powered by 2.2 GHz Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor paired with 2 GB RAM, and 32 GB in-built memory expandable with a micro SD card of up to 32 GB. Interestingly, Nokia believes that the tablet can also double up as a camera, so it has added a 6.7 MP camera with Zeiss optics at its back. A battery of 8000 mAh ensures that the device gives good backup. Thanks to ultra-fast charging feature, the tablet can be charged up to 80% from nil within an hour.

Nokia Lumia 2520 with Nokia Power Keyboard

Company has also announced a keyboard accessory dubbed as Nokia Power Keyboard, which also serves as a protective cover. The keyboard also adds an extra battery giving up to 5 hours of extra usage, and 2 USB ports.

Software Goodies: Nokia’s Camera app, Video Director, Vine & Instagram coming to WP

The sore point of Asha 501 was the unavailability of popular chatting app WhatsApp, which is finally coming to the new devices as well as Asha 501. Nokia also introduced imaging apps such as Picfeed, Pictag and Photofunia to add an element of fun in the pictures clicked by Asha devices. There are couple of games as well coming to these phones. The Asha phones will also support VoIP functionality on the apps like Nimbuzz.

For Windows Phone 8 based devices, Nokia has introduced some of their own apps. The Nokia Camera app combines the good part from its Smart Camera app and Pro Camera app to bring one app, which means users will be in control of the camera settings and effects. Nokia Storyteller app integrates the images captured from the Lumia smartphone with HERE location data to show pictures on a map. Users can also check points of interest, contact information and user reviews right from the app. Nokia Video Director application makes it easy for anyone to edit videos on the fly. Nokia Beamer allows sharing of the Lumia screen (pictures, map and even camera viewfinder) to any compatible screen remotely by simple sharing of link via email, social networks or SMS.

Another missing part in Lumia devices was the photography app- Instagram, which will be coming soon to all Nokia devices. Windows Phone OS will also be getting short video recording app Vine. To enjoy the large screen experience, there will also be handwriting note-taking apps- Papyrus and InNote. Visually pleasing news reading app Flipboard will also make its way on Lumia 2520 as well as Lumia smartphones.

All of the above mentioned app will also be available for earlier Asha phones and Lumia devices respectively.
