This week saw some interesting launches and announcements. For Windows fans, Microsoft announced the impending arrival of its Lumia flagships and the Surface Pro 4 in the coming months. The long-awaited Apple Watch made its debut, and the mid-range segment saw plenty of action from Samsung, Gionee and Micromax. Let’s take a look at all this and more, in detail.
Somewhere between the budget and mid-range segment, Samsung launched two new 4G enabled smartphones dubbed the Galaxy On5 and the Galaxy On7. While the former is a smaller device with a 5-inch display, the latter sports a larger 5.5-inch screen. The On5 has been priced at Rs 8,990, the On7 comes with a price tag of Rs 10,990.

At its FutureUnleashed event, Microsoft made some exciting announcements. The Surface Pro 4, which was unveiled in the US just last month, will be the first Surface to be launched in India. The company’s CEO Satya Nadella has confirmed that it will be launched in January 2016. Additionally, the brand announced that its flagships, the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, will be launched in December this year. While there is no word about the Indian pricing of the two Windows 10 smartphones, the Surface Pro 4 starts at $899 in the US, which roughly translates to Rs 59,000.
Sporting a Retina display with Force Touch technology, the Apple Watch has been officially launched in India with a starting price of Rs 30,900. The smartwatch runs watchOS 2 and can be picked up in three different variants – Apple Watch, Watch Sport and Watch Edition. While the aforementioned price corresponds to the base model of the Watch Sport variant, the Apple Watch variant’s base model will cost you Rs 48,900. Since the Watch Edition collection is crafted from 18-Carat gold, this model comes for a starting price of Rs 8,20,000.
Gionee launched its first smartphone which utilises a USB Type-C port, the S Plus. The smartphone also offers a Face Unlock feature, which, as the company claims, can unlock the device in less than a second by recognising the user’s face. The 4G-enabled Gionee S Plus runs Android 5.1 Lollipop. The phone can be grabbed in Dark Blue, Golden or White colours.
Micromax made another addition to its Canvas series by launching its flagship Canvas 5. The smartphone sports a lot of interesting features including a 2.5D curved glass display, 4G support, phase detection autofocus and a faux leather back panel. The Micromax Canvas 5 also comes with the brand’s seven-day service guarantee, which will now be available on all Micromax devices priced above Rs 10,000.
