MTNL or Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd has increased the ISD call rates in the Delhi circle. These call rates are applicable on calling to 6 countries like Canada, U.S.A, Singapore, China, Hong Kong and Thailand. The call charges have been increased from Rs. 1/minute to Rs. 2/minute for the land-line and postpaid mobile service users. These new rates have become effective from the 5th of May 2012. This tariff charged from the Delhi users is the default tariff and does not require the usage of any pack.
MTNL had no other choice besides increasing the call charges as the average charges on call termination for ISD have been increased. The ISD call rates for the Mumbai circle have already been increased by MTNL in Feb this year.
However even after the increase in tariff to Rs.2/minute MTNL’s ISD calls are still the cheapest in India. The other mobile service providers charge upto Rs. 10/ minute as default rates for ISD calls.
However with the new set of guidelines suggested by TRAI the local and STD call charges in India will also go up. After the 2G scam the government is all set to recover the losses through the telecom sector. The mobile service users in India should gear up for the price hikes that are to come their way soon.
