“2015 saw the smartphone arena, both globally as well as in India, grow by leaps and bounds. Here’s a bird’s eye view”
If you reside in India and are looking to buy a new phone, the scenario has never been better. Regardless of your budget, you’re bound to be spoiled for choice – thanks to the assortment of phone brands that exist in the country and the wide range of models they have to offer. If you aren’t too picky about the brand, chances are you’ll be able to snag a swanky, loaded smartphone offering all the latest specs and features for mouth-watering prices. The year 2015 took the smartphone segment to a totally new level, and courtesy the incursion by new international brands (mostly from China) along with a flurry of loaded offerings by Indian companies, consumers were treated to a wide variety of options being made available at affordable price points. The noteworthy names in this list would include the likes of MEIZU, Coolpad and QiKU, along with YU from India. Others like Xiaomi, OnePlus, ASUS and Motorola didn’t stay idle either, and stocked (virtual) shelves with some compelling options of their own, while established Indian companies like Micromax and Intex turned on the heat as well. This boom, in turn, prompted tier-1 incumbents like Samsung and HTC to pull up their socks and come up with better, more capable smartphones, priced attractively. Samsung’s J series, and more recently, the On range, is a good example of this. On the premium end of the spectrum, we saw some mesmerising options too – the first 4K phone in the form of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge and Note5, the 3D Touch-enabled Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, the LG G4, and the gorgeous and powerful Google Nexus 6P, just to name a few. It won’t be a bad idea to take a look at some of the phones that got us reeling in excitement this year, along with the ones we adjudged the best in the respective categories.
