Government of Karnataka’s Centre for e- Governance has collaborated with OnMobile Global Ltd., the leading provider of telecom value-added services (VAS), to launch a mobile governance system. Phase 1 (Pilot) of the mobile governance services for the citizens of Karnataka has already been launched. OnMobile is providing the underlying technology platform and services to help design, develop and different governance services over the mobile phone across channels such as Interactive Voice Response (IVR), Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) and mobile browsers or WAP. The Centre for e- Governance, through this initiative, intends to enable citizen services on the mobile phone by means of an integrated mobile-enabled service delivery system. With this unique m-Governance offering, OnMobile hopes to help the Government create an ecosystem that will assist departments offer their services to citizens on the mobile and also encourage innovation in the mobile utility services space. Some services introduced in the pilot phase include information services like Sakala services; utility services like electricity, water, and BSNL landline and mobile bill payments; traffic services like bus routes and timing information, and traffic alerts service and pending traffic fine payments. The platform offers payment of utility bills through multiple channels including credit card and mobile banking using Internet Mobile Payment Services (IMPS). More information based and interactive services will be launched in the coming months under the Government to Citizen, Government to Government, Government to Business and Government to Employee categories. This is a very progressive move by the Karnataka government which has always been tech savvy when it comes to exploiting the internet platform and hopefully, rest of the state governments in the country will follow the footsteps of the Karnataka government and take similar initiatives.
