What are the key specs of the Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus? How much does it cost?

Just like the brand’s previous flagship, the Karbonn Titanium X (review), the Octane Plus bears a 5-inch display with full HD resolution (441ppi). But the real highlight of the smartphone – which is clear from its name as well – is an octa-core processor from MediaTek clocked at 1.7GHz. The powerful chipset is accompanied by 2GB of RAM. For storage, the device comes with 16GB of expandable memory. The camera department includes a 16-megapixel primary shooter along with an LED flash and an 8MP front-facing camera. The device draws juice from a removable 2,000mAh Li-Po battery.

The smartphone will set you back by roughly Rs 18,000.

The retail packaging of the Titanium Octane Plus comes with all the usual stuff, which includes the smartphone itself, the battery, micro-USB cable, 1A wall charger, earphones, a user manual and a warranty card.

How’s the build quality of the Titanium Octane Plus?

Like most smartphones these days, the Titanium Octane Plus is fashioned out of plastic. But the similarities end there, as even with plastic, Karbonn has managed to make the device stand out from others. It’s quite sleek at 7.6mm and weighs just 140g, plus the dual-colour finish adds a nice touch. Our review unit is a combination of black and white, and we’ve got to admit that it looks very classy.

Is the display of the Titanium Octane Plus protected by Corning Gorilla Glass?

The answer to that question would be no. As a result, we also suggest you use a screen protector on the display to safeguard it against scratches and fingerprints.

Out of the 16GB of internal storage, how much is accessible to the user?

Instead of one complete chunk, the storage has been partitioned into 5.71GB and 7.67GB units. From the first partition, 5.41GB is available to use, while the latter offers almost the complete 7.66GB of space. If that’s not enough, you can also add a microSD card up to 32GB in size.

Does the Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus offer support for OTG?

Apart from the onboard storage that can further be expanded via microSD, you can also connect flash drives to the phone thanks to the support for USB On-the-Go. However, you’ll need to invest in an OTG cable, since the retail box doesn’t include one.

Is the Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus a dual-SIM smartphone? What other connectivity features are on offer?

Yes, the Titanium Octane Plus supports a pair of SIM cards, with one being a full-size SIM and other a micro-SIM. However, it’s important to note that the 3G access is only supported on the micro-SIM. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Wireless Display and GPS.

Sadly, while its predecessor supported NFC, the Octane Plus has missed out on Near Field Communication functionality.

The SAR value of the device is 0.395W/kg, which is well below the permissible limits of 1.6W/kg.

What Android iteration does the Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus ship with? Are there any customisations from the brand?

The Titanium Octane Plus runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box. Thankfully, there are no customisations from the brand in any manner. But, the phone does get a few pre-installed apps, such as Amazon, Firstpost, OLXSaavn as well as trial version of games like Modern Combat 4 Zero Hour and The Avengers. What’s bewildering, however is that you can’t uninstall any of these apps.

There’s also a cheaper sibling of the device. How are the Karbonn Titanium Octane and Octane Plus different?

The only similarity between the Octane and Octane Plus is that they’re fuelled by the same MediaTek MT6592 octa-core SoC. The Titanium Octane is a trimmed-down variant of its sibling, offering a 5-inch HD display (294ppi), 1GB RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera with an LED flash and a 5MP secondary snapper.
