HTC Desire 616 Dual SIM first impressions: a notable mid-range smartphone

“The HTC Desire 616 looks like a noteworthy mid-ranger with dual-SIM support”

HTC just made the dual-SIM Desire 616 official in India today, and the device adds to the sea of choices available if you’re looking for a capable dual-SIM smartphone without selling your kidney. The smartphone’s claim to fame is that it’s the very first device from HTC rocking an octa-core processor, and that should translate into smooth performance. As we’re wont to do, we played around with a demo unit at the launch event and here are our first impressions.

Available in dark grey or white, we got our paws on the rather plain Jane grey version, and at first glance, it stands out as a typical HTC offering, thanks to the design language it sports. Clad in a plastic body with rounded edges, it sports a 5-inch 720p display at the front, with three capacitive keys below, and the 2MP front snapper, sensors and large orifices that hide the phone earpiece on top.

Flip the device around and you’ll be greeted by a glossy back, which is quite prone to smudges. An 8-megapixel snapper and an LED flash also adorn the rear, along with the phone speaker closer to the bottom. While we couldn’t open the back panel without the alarms ringing, we know it hides a 2,000mAh battery, a microSD slot and a pair of SIM slots – most likely one that supports a regular SIM and another that accepts a micro-SIM.

The top is home to the audio socket, while the bottom is where the micro-USB port is located. The power and volume keys have been placed on the right.

The software offering includes the dated Android 4.2.2, layered with HTC’s Sense UI , complete with BlinkFeed. Inside ticks a 1.4GHz octa-core MediaTek processor along with a gig of RAM and a paltry 4GB of expandable storage, less than half of which is available. The connectivity options are quite standard too. From the brief amount of time we spent with the device, the usage seemed smooth, though we’d like to reserve comment till the time we get to review it. Needless to say, we’ll have lots more info on the Desire 616 along with a full review shortly… so do keep an eye out.
