Gionee Elife S7 unboxing: a box full of goodies

“The Gionee Elife S7 retail box comes filled to the brim with useful stuff”

The premium devices from Gionee have always score high on the style factor, but it’s the S series from the brand that sits at the top of the list. The Gionee Elife S5.5 (review) and the Elife S5.1 (review) both held the world’s slimmest smartphone crown at launch time, but with its latest, the Elife S7, the brand has chosen to remain out of the slim smartphone wars. And it makes a lot of sense too, as super-slim smartphones are quite tough to manufacturer without compromising on ergonomics and heat dissipation is also a big issue. The Gionee Elife S7 (first impressions) was first unveiled at MWC this year, and has just landed in India carrying a sticker price of Rs 24,999.

The smartphone comes clad in a 5.5mm thick metal and glass body, and features a 5.2-inch full HD Super AMOLED display. Inside, you’ll find a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek chip clocked at 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 16GB non-expandable storage, and a 2,750mAh battery. The S7 is a dual-SIM device, and also supports 4G bands in India. Photography is handled by a 13MP primary and an 8MP front shooter. The software side of things include Android Lollipop, with Gionee’s custom ROM Amigo 3.0 on top. And since we have the device with us for review, it’s time to take a gander at what’s included in the retail pack.

Frankly, unboxing smartphones is usually just a customary exercise, since we already know what to expect. Chargers and USB cables are a given of course, and the only suspense remaining these days is whether a pair of headphones is included or not. Quite a few brands have been giving those a skip in the recent past. Unboxing a premium smartphone from Gionee is fun however, since the brand always packs in tons of stuff. Let’s get started.

The Gionee Elife S7 comes in a flat, square-shaped cardboard box which has a Gionee logo and the model name emblazoned on top, and a bunch of stickers, key specs and regulatory info at the back.

Opening the box revealed the smartphone lying on top, resting on a large plastic tray. Pushing that out the way, we got our first peek into the innards of the box, and as expected, discovered quite a few accessories. On the right, a wired stereo headset can be seen, neatly wrapped around a plastic packaging so only the pair of in-ear buds are visible. The rest of the cable rests inside a cavity bellow, and we also found spare rubber tips that ensure optimum fit. A 2-pin wall charger (1A), a USB cable and an OTG adapter are also packed inside separate cavities. Oh, a SIM eject tool is also there of course.

On the left side of the box, we found a black faux-leather flip cover, with a window cut-out on top. The quality of the material looks decent, and it can be attached to the S7 by using an adhesive strip on the back. Below the cover, there are four transparent film protectors – two for the screen and two for the rear of the device.

Next, we found the usual documentation in the form of a user guide and a warranty card, and right at the bottom, a plastic back cover that you can use instead of the flip cover if you just need basic protection without adding bulk to the slim device.

So in terms of extras, that makes two different types of cases, screen protectors for both sides of the phone (with one spare for each side), and an OTG adapter, which is always a handy accessory to have. Everything you need to get started with the device is included right in the box, saving you the hassle of hunting around for accessories. Now you know why we find unboxing Gionee smartphones a pleasurable experience. Now we just hope that the same feeling continues as we put the Elife S7 through our review grind. Watch this space.
