“The retail box of Gionee’s latest flagship, the Elife E8 comes crammed with a bunch of goodies”
Gionee took the covers off its flagship, the Elife E8 (first impressions) at a massive event held in Beijing back in June this year, and the phablet was supposed to reach Indian shores sometime in August. It only landed earlier this month, and priced at Rs 34,999, brings loaded specs to the table. The Elife E8 also marks the brand’s debut into the e-commerce space, as this is the first time Gionee has officially tied up with an online retailer to sell a device in the country. The new phablet is a Snapdeal exclusive, and just like its predecessor, the Elife E7 (review), boast a powerful set of shooters. On offer is a 24-megapixel primary camera, complete with optical image stabilisation, a 6P lens, a true-tone LED flash, sapphire lens cover, and 4K video recording support. There’s even a dedicated hardware shutter key. An 8MP selfie shooter at front promises pristine self portraits too.
As far as the core specs are concerned, Gionee has gone all out to ensure the new smartphone justifies its flagship credentials. The highlights include a 6-inch WQHD display, a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 processor running at 2GHz, and 3GB of RAM, along with 64GB storage which is expandable by another 128GB. The Elife E8 is a dual-SIM device and supports 4G as well. The other connectivity features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and GPS. A non-removable 3,520mAh battery that supports fast charging is responsible for supplying power. Notably, it also features a fingerprint scanner at the rear. The software side of things includes Android 5.1.1, with the latest version of Gionee’s Amigo UI on top.
Unboxing Gionee’s smartphones, especially the premium ones, is a rewarding experience. The brand usually packs in a bunch of useful accessories such as cases and screen protectors right inside the retail box so that the user doesn’t need to hunt around for the basic stuff before getting started. The Elife E8’s retail box didn’t disappoint either, and we opened it like kids unwrapping Christmas gifts… excited at the prospect of discovering tons of goodies inside.
The Elife E8 is a beast of a device, both in terms of specs as well as the size. Its massive 6-inch display size means its a large device, and accordingly, it comes in a large pack almost the size of a tiffin box. The white box bears an outline of the phone on top, and the usual labels, specs and regulatory info at the bottom. Opening the lid reveals the phablet lying on top, wrapped in plastic and resting atop a tray. Our review unit comes in gold. Take that out and you’ll see a flip cover in matching gold hue, featuring a window for access to some of the phone’s functions. The flip cover replaces the default back cover of the phone.
Right below that, you’ll find a cardboard envelope hiding three programmable NFC stickers, a user guide and warranty information, along with a clear screen protector and wiping cloth.
Right at the bottom of the box, you’ll find a two-pin wall charger (2A), a micro-USB cable, and a gold-coloured wired headset. The latter comes with differently-sized spare rubber tips for a customised fit, and looks quite premium.
So as usual, Gionee has crammed the Elife E8 retail box with tons of stuff, and made sure it comes across as a complete package for buyers. The device looks like a complete package itself, at least as far as specs are concerned. A full lowdown of its shooting capabilities, plus a detailed review on how it fares as a daily driver, are in the pipeline as you read this. Don’t go anywhere.
