Leading e-commerce site Flipkart has finally launched a native app for iOS, two months after it launched its Android app. Prior to this, Flipkart was only available as a web app on mobile phones. Flipkart’s eBooks
(though, the service is now defunct) apps are already available on the App Store.
The app is smooth and efficient, and is almost identical to the Android interface. Flipkart’s native apps are very similar to the website, so users will find it easy to navigate.
The app is divided into various sections, such as special offers and savings, popular products and recently viewed items. Major departments are highlighted on the screen, but users can scroll through the complete list of categories by tapping the menu button on the top left corner.
The app provides sort and filter functions to narrow down search results, a zoom feature for product images and ability to view recently browsed products without a network connection. Users will also be able read reviews and share links of products to Google+ and Facebook from the app.
Regarding payment options, all the usual methods like Cash on Delivery, Credit/Debit cards, EMI and Net Banking are available. Users will also be able to track their order shipments from the app.
A few functions which were available on the Android app are missing in the iOS version, like voice search and barcode scanning.
The app is compatible with iOS 5.0 onwards and is available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. You can download
it for free from the App Store.
E-commerce apps on the App Store
Many e-commerce sites have been reluctant to launch iOS apps because of Apple’s 30% commission on all in-app transactions. However, retailers are grasping the importance of having a mobile presence, and now there are several options available to iOS users.
The Amazon app will now support India as one of it’s universal stores. Prominent features include a barcode scanner, 1 click ordering, Wish Lists, Prime member support and order tracking.
The eBay app provides users bid alerts and notifications when they have won or sold a product, received an offer, payment, message or have been outbid. Direct sharing to Facebook, Twitter, Email and SMS is available within the app, as is a barcode scanner.
Indiatimes shopping has updated its app for iOS 7. The app displays ‘Today’s Deal’ and ‘Featured Products’, and features a navigation toolbar at the bottom. Other features include a barcode scanner and ability to zoom product images.
HomeShop 18 is currently offering users Rs 100 off on a purchase of Rs 1000 and above if they install the iOS app. The app offers both barcode and QR code scanning, and even lets users watch a live stream of the HomeShop18 TV channel.
Yebhi.com has updated its app for iOS 7 with a clean and simple interface. It offers users notifications on the best deals and a ‘Retry Payment’ option in case of payment failure. The app has also added sharing for Google+, Facebook and email.
The Tradus.com app now offers location-based shopping. Users will be able to buy from nearby sellers and avail a same-day delivery from local sellers. Shopping is simplified with filters and sort functionality, and users will be able to read and write reviews from the app.
ngpay has been developed specifically for a mobile interface, and offers a shopping portal to various brands. Some of the featured brands include IRCTC, PVR Cinemas, Indigo, Tata Sky, Airtel and Air India.
