The external material storage area at the Nokia Plant caught fire on Thursday. Firefighters struggled for an hour to get back the scene under control. Since the fire spread because of inflammable chemicals kept in the storage area there were no life injuries. The Company is situated in the Nokia Special Economic Zone near Sriperumbudur which is 35 kilometers away from Chennai City.
It was around 11 a.m. that a thick smoke swelled from the storage area of Perlos Telecommunication and Electronic Components India which manufactures cell phone covers for Nokia. Fire tender from Kancheepuram reached the site first and followed by three more from Sriperumbudur, Maraimalai Nagar and Ambattur. K Parthiban, Divisional officer, Fire and Rescue Service, Kancheepuram says “The fire fighters could not put out the fire immediately as the fire spread due to paints and varnish kept in the godown, at least 3,000 litres of paint and 47 tonnes of varnish were kept at the godown.”
It took around four hours, 50 fire fighters with 20 water tankers to ground the flames. The nearby situated Hyundai Motor plant has sent two of its fire tenders to join the battle. The main factory is situated 200 metres away from the storage area where the fire broke out.
Police officials said, “a case was registered in Sriperumbudur Police Station and we are investigating the reason for the fire. We suspect it was an electrical short circuit”
