Rise of Indian Mobile Phones!

IDC India, a premier market research firm based in India, has released it’s latest data on Mobile Phone Handsets in India. According to them, total of 101.9 million  handsets were sold in India between the period December 2008 and December 2009.  That’s a growth of 6.7% over the previous cycle (94.6 million handsets). Even though the growth has been flat for a period of 6 months (between June 2009 and December 2009), the market share of the players have changed. Domestic Mobile handset manufacturers have grown strength-to-strength and have captured 17.5% of the 100 million market size! The market share of domestic manufacturers was just 0.6% in December 2008! If we put this in pure numbers, the number of indian mobile handsets has grown from 600,000 to a whopping 1.75 crore handsets (17.5 million)! So, who has lost the market share. It turns out to be the giants! Nokia has lost 2%,  LG dropped 0.8%. Samsung is the only international players which has managed a slight growth! There are around 48 Indian Mobile manufacturers (though IDC reports only 26!). Among the domestic players, Micromax has seen a tremendous growth with a market share of 4.8%. Karbonn Mobiles, Videocon Mobiles, Lava and Spice are other domestic players showing good growth rate! Nokia has expressed reservations about the market research, as IDC has left out the manufacturing plant of Nokia based in chennai. The shipments from this facility is largely meant for domestic consumption and the shipments from this facility were not considered in the market research. So, take the number from IDC with a pinch of salt. But, the bottomline remains true – that the domestic players are seeing growth and they are showing that entry and growth in a highly competitive segment is possible with good mix of features, pricing and product! source: livemint
