Mobile operators to send data usage alerts on roaming

60a22__img0594-600This is something good for the mobile users. But more than that, this news is surprising on the context that GSMA, also known as Mobile World Congress, did a commendable job by making 24 mobile operators to agree on a single point. These 24 mobile operators will now send standard data usage SMS alerts to the users who are on roaming. This step has been taken to empower the users to make an informed decision. The users will now be better informed about their mobile tariff rates irrespective of the country they are based in. Along with that, the mobile operators have also agreed to set a maximum cap on the data usage while a user is on roaming. The mobile service will get deactivated if that maximum limit is crossed. Companies from all around the globe has signed this agreement and their names are as follows: America Movil, AT&T, Axiata Group Berhad, Bharti Airtel, Ltd., China Mobile, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom-Orange, Hutchison 3 Group, KT Corporation, MTS, Qtel, SK Telecom, Smart Communications, Inc., SoftBank Mobile Corp., Tata Teleservices Limited, Telecom Italia Group, Telefonica, Telekom Austria Group, Telenor Group, TeliaSonera, Verizon Communications, VimpelCom, and Vodafone Group. This agreement will come into force by the end of 2012. Mobile operators are optimistic that people (on short visits) will no longer be looking to buy a local SIM. It is definitely a good initiative by the mobile operators but we will have to wait and see its actual impact on the customers.
