“We answer all your queries about the gigantic smartphone that is the Vibe Z2 Pro”
With the acquisition of Motorola, Lenovo has become the third largest smartphone vendor globally. However, even after being present in India for several years, it hasn’t been able to make its mark in the smartphone segment, as it has done for its range of laptops.
But with the recent surge of Chinese brands, Lenovo is also upping the ante with its offerings in the Indian market. It’s latest flagship offering, the Vibe Z2 Pro simply blows away the competition with its hardware. We’re using the device as our daily driver to see how well all that combination fares in real-life usage. But before we do that, we wanted to squash your doubts about the phablet. So, here’s everything that you should know about the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro.
So, what kind of specs are we talking about for the Vibe Z2 Pro?
The Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro is a flagship in every sense of the word, and comes with a humongous 6-inch display. The display panel bears a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, equalling to rich pixel density of 500ppi. Under the bonnet sits a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor offering four cores beating at 2.5GHz. The chipset is supported by the Adreno 320 graphics rendering engine and a healthy 3GB of RAM. For storage, the device is equipped with 32GB flash memory. Juicing it up is a beefy 4,000mAh battery.
What does the retail packaging of the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro include?
The Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro comes in a premium-looking retail box, which includes the smartphone itself and the usual accessories like a wall charger, micro-USB cable and a pair of earphones. As noted in our unboxing, we really liked the fact that both the micro-USB cable and earphones are of the tangle-free variety. Along with that, the box also offers a SIM tray ejection tool, a screen protector and a couple of manuals.
Is the Vibe Z2 Pro too big to handle with its large display? What about its build quality?
There’s a little doubt that the Vibe Z2 Pro is a gigantic smartphone, thanks to its large display. However, Lenovo has pulled off an impressive feat by shaving off the extra bezels and you’ll find very minimal amount of wasted space around the screen. This has helped in keeping the width of the device in check, although it’s still large which makes it difficult to use with a single hand.
The Vibe Z2 Pro has been crafted from metal, giving it a premium look and feel. Due to its large size, it might come across as bulky to some, though it bears an average thickness of 7.8mm. The unibody smartphone feels extremely robust as well.
Is a Gorilla Glass layer present on the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro’s screen?
Definitely. The display on the Vibe Z2 Pro is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3, ensuring it doesn’t get damaged by scratches easily.
Is the Vibe Z2 Pro a dual-SIM smartphone? Does it support 4G connectivity?
The Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro is one of the very few flagship devices in the market that accepts a pair of SIM cards (of micro-SIM type). Sadly, the device misses out on 4G support in India. It does have 4G, but it doesn’t have support for the current Indian 4G frequency of 2,300MHz. However, India might start LTE services in another band of 1,800MHz and then the phablet will definitely be used for next-gen cellular connectivity.
How’s the camera performance of the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro?
Lenovo has mounted a 16-megapixel BSI sensor at the back of the Vibe Z2 Pro. The rear camera has autofocus and OIS capabilities, and is helped by a dual-LED flash which assists when shooting in low-light conditions. On the front, the phablet sports a 5-megapixel autofocus camera to make sure you have a great video calling experience and lovely selfies. We have taken an in-depth look at the camera quality of the Vibe Z2 Pro, so give it a read if you want to know more. But for your convenience, we have also embedded a few pictures we clicked with the smartphone below.
How much storage is available to the user in the Vibe Z2 Pro? Can I extend it further?
The Vibe Z2 Pro comes with a generous 32GB flash storage and users will be able to use 25.2GB space out of it.
Since the device lacks an expansion slot, you can’t increase the available storage, but you can make use of USB OTG capabilities to connect flash drives directly.
What’s the OS on the Vibe Z2 Pro? What kind of features does it offer?
The OS on offer on the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro is Android 4.4 KitKat. Like most Chinese smartphone makers, Lenovo has overlaid the Android UI with its own layer, referred to as Vibe UI. Currently in version 2.0, Lenovo’s UI completely rethinks the stock interface as there’s no separate homescreen and app launcher menu. The icons, notification shade, default apps, etc. have completely been redesigned. In terms of preloaded apps, the device comes preinstalled with Facebook, Guvera music streaming app, the trial version of games such as Asphalt 8 and Real Football 2014, among others along with Google’s suite of apps.
One really interesting feature in the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro is that if you don’t like the custom UI, then you can easily switch to stock Android.
So, how can I switch the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro’s UI to stock Android 4.4 KitKat?
Well it’s very easy, and there’s no need to root the device (and voiding your warranty in the process). You don’t even need to back up your data as all your data remains intact. All you need to do is to follow these steps:
1) The mode isn’t available upfront and to view this option, you first have to enable Developer Mode on the phablet.
2) For enabling the ‘Developer Mode’, visit the settings menu, then go to the ‘About phone’ section, and open ‘Version information’. Now, you need to tap the Software version number’ six to seven times. You’ll immediately get a prompt that “you are now a developer”.
3) Now, you’ll see Developer options in the device settings, and after tapping on it, you have to activate this mode, which gives you a cautionary warning that the settings should be tampered with carefully.
4) Click on the very first option, which says ‘Switch system UI style’.
5) Voila! sit back and relax as the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro will reboot to bring you the stock Android interface.
If you again want to switch back to Lenovo’s custom UI, then you have to disable the mode mentioned in step 4.
What’s the pricing of the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro and from where I can buy it?
